Catching up with Segue

Posted in Hike '08 at 2:01 pm by segue

or… Lost in the wilds of the AT

Okay So I haven’t been updating. But please let me explain. Out of twenty eight days on the trail about twenty three of those have been in the rain. Either raining on us soaking everything. raining all night long and waking up in a stream that wasn’t there the night before, or overcast all day and cold so nothing drys out. When it rains it’s harder to do the miles we need to so we are behind a few days. Also haven’t had internet access. When I get back to my sisters on the 10th-15th I will update the images I’ve been taking and catch everyone up on the travels.

20mi to Manchester Center VT.

Nothing like puling a -1.4mi then 19mi day and finishing it off with a 20mi day just to make it back into another town where our drop boxes are. Woke up to another cold wet day, rained all night. Looked out and Floyd had made it into camp after I fell asleep. Climbed Straton Mt. 3936′ Cold climb lots of fog. Shooting to get into town tonight pushing the final 10mi. Long and tired from yesterdays long miles. Floyd keeping up we humped hard into town and thumbed a ride to Avalanche Motel.

-1.4mi into Bennington

Wet!!! Woke up rain falling everything wet, socks, shorts, shirt, tent. Even tried to start a small fire to dry out. Couldn’t even get paper to catch and burn. It started to rain again and I lost spoony! Wet and mud starting to get to me. Cold low 40ºs so what to do. Back track 1.4mi to RT9 and catch a ride into Bennington.

Saw Cara and Erica sitting in the parking area. Thinking the same as Floyd and I. Time off get dry. They went to the right into Jamaica and we headed to the left into Bennington. Always seems we are heading in the opposite direction.

We ate dinner then headed out 5.8mi to Melville humping hard to stay ahead of the thunder and rain. Made it into camp just before total dark. Shelter already packed full. Found a flat space set up tent. Rained all night.

16mi to Seth Warner

Evil Greylock!

Taunted us with clear skies, then fogged us in as soon as we made the summit. We had a big day and with 9+ miles still to go to reach the VT border.

Back to the Green mountains. With one last kick in the ass from MA. 1000′ up a rock slide. and teasing us with a moving border finally made it home again to The Green Mountains. Could tell the change immediately. Got into Seth Warner shelter with light to spare. Met Cara, Erica, Kaya they were on their first day of a Long Trail through hike.

to Mark Noepel

Slept in late dark room. Mailed off our boxes and headed out of town. Going to Cheshire looking for Denatured Alcohol. Strong Thunder, of course, chased us into Floyd’s Mecca a Shell station, hiker friendly with a big overhang. Where we waited out a strong violent thunder storm buying lottery tickets.

Only five miles to go made it into the shelter early with 23 people already in camp. Two groups of camp councilors in training were there.

“I’m feeling happy! Accckkkkkk, THuuuupppppp!” Floyd
“You okay? Whats all that noise?” Segue
“I just swallowed a bug!” Floyd

Day 42 June 12

17.6 mi to Kaywood Lean-to

Beautiful day for a walk! Ma finally gave in and gave us a day without huge rocks, swamp, rain, or high temps.

After eating our weight in “PANCAKES!” Every few minutes we would hear Penny scream from the back kitchen PANCAKES! and Mike would stop what every story he was in the middle of weaving, run into the cabin and fetch the latest batch of hot PANCAKES! they started out as raspberry and blackberry. By the end they had broken into their stash of blueberries and made several rounds of blueberry PANCAKES!

After eating as much as our bellies would hold we napped until noon.

We passed several lakes and beaver ponds. Saw to Great Blue Loons. Got to the first lean-to about 4p and still had 8.8mi to go before dark. Easy flat walk beautiful blue skies with a beautiful sunset.

14mi to Upper Goose Pond

Beautiful day for a walk! 20º cooler then last week. Dryer, breezy and an easy 14mi. Hips and knees hurting a lot. Lots of muck and swamp in the trail running like stream. Got into cabin with enough time for a cool swim in the lake after meeting Mike, Penny and Noked a half Border Collie/Australian Shepherd. Great people Mike and Penny lots of stories and tails of the trail. Fed us very ripe great tasting cantaloupe which Noked intently watched us eat every dripping bite.
