Packaging and labeling maildrops

Use sturdy boxes made for specifically shipping; avoid thin cardboard boxes. Use a 2-inch plastic wrapping tape (avoid duct tape) and wrap tape completely around each box in several directions several times. Use a self-adhesive label, printed or typed clearly as follows:

Place the phrase “Hold for A.T. hiker” and my expected due date in the lower corner of the box or label. You may want to write my last name, destination of the maildrop, and ZIP Code elsewhere on the box, just in case the label detaches. The U.S. Postal Service rarely loses maildrop packages that are properly wrapped and addressed, so take the time necessary to do a good job.

To calculate the date for mailing a maildrop package to a post office, a minimum of ten to fourteen post-office working days before you expect to arrive at the post office. Be sure to compensate for holidays and weekends when calculating the mailing date.

IMPORTANT! Do not send UPS or Federal Express packages to post offices, since postal personnel are prevented by law from accepting and/or holding them.
